#Greenwahing claims?
Over the past three years, "#carbon_neutral" claims have evolved from corporate marketing tools to significant legal and #reputational_risks. Apple's case exemplifies this shift as courts and regulators demand more precise environmental claims. In a 2025 German court ruling, Apple's "CO2 neutral" claim for its Apple Watch was deemed misleading, setting a new durability standard linked to the Paris Agreement's 2050 goals. Similarly, a U.S. class-action lawsuit questions the scientific validity of Apple's carbon offset projects, using satellite imagery to challenge their value. Regulatory responses vary, with the EU's Green Claims Directive mandating independent verification of claims and the UK empowering its Green Claims Code to impose hefty fines. Meanwhile, the U.S. lacks specific regulations, leaving private litigation to fill the gap. These changes necessitate that companies like Apple shift from carbon offsetting narratives to transparent emissions reductions within their value chains.
